Wakodo no Hiroba, “Youth Plaza”
The Memorial for Students who Perished in the War, which was designed by Kenzo Tange and built in 1966 to commemorate students who died in World War II, had been closed since the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995. At the request of Minami Awaji City, Tange Associates have been engaged in renovation efforts for the past 4 years. The design of the memorial tower and the administrative building with unfinished concrete vaulted ceiling are preserved as the original, while seismic reinforcement is made. The masonry inner and outer walls of the building, which had become vulnerable by earthquake damage, were repaired and restored. In addition, an observatory on the top of the administrative building, an exhibition space to exhibit works by young artists and a stage to hold various events are newly created in the park. The renovated park will open in March.
