Opening Ceremony of Rikuzentakata Community Hall

Rikuzentakata Community Hall in Takata West District in Rikuzentakata City, one of the areas worst affected by the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, will be completed on March 25.  It is expected to become the center of the new town as a multi-purpose facility for the community. In times of emergency, it will also function as a disaster response center with helipad, emergency power generation equipment and stockpiling warehouse.

JPY700 million, approximately half the cost of construction, was raised by the Singapore Red Cross to aid earthquake and tsunami relief efforts.  To show the city’s appreciation to Singapore, a letter of appreciation was presented to H.E. Mr. K. Shanmugam, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law, the Republic of Singapore, at the opening ceremony of the facilities held on March 16th.  After the ceremony, Paul Noritaka Tange explained the Rikuzentakata Community Hall project to him and guided him inside of the building.
